Is he a great leveler ? Or is that some attitude?

He thinks that all things on this planet should lie on their lowest possible altitude !

Food n plates would fly from the table and on to the floor,

He is always in action and is never a bore !

Books will fly from the shelf on to the floor,

Putting them back on the shelf doesn't make sense any more !

His mum will spend hours to put the washed clothes in a pile,

He will come like a storm and all her efforts would seem futile !

That he remains a great leveler always is my wish and a thought, very profound,

I hope that he always has his Head firmly on your shoulders and feet firmly on the ground !

He learnt ABCDs, then Twinkle-Twinkle poems, and these days his favourite color is Blue,

Till last month , XXX Investment Bank was Hiring , I said 'Wow' ,
But in the name of cost cutting , they have started the Firing once again Now !

Not 1 , Not 2 , Number of employees are abundant,
One-by-one they are all being made redundant .

With less of number of people in the team , new responsibilities will be plenty,
Mostly the people who were fired seemed happy, Though Some were obviously senti !

We know Suhaan is full of energy, We know He is restless.
Expecting him to play with Soft Toys? Its just useless.

Poor toys, they crave for Suhaan's sight,
To make him play with his toys is always a Fight.

To guess the kind of toys he will like, is always a tension.
Just dont understand who or what can get his pure and unadulterated attention !

Finally I found something which got nonstop attention from Suhaan.

For few minutes he stood still in front of TV and watched 'Sheela ki Jawani' ,

SnS HeadQuarters

October 2007 , Sumeet and Subarna were house hunting in London.(London Docklands to be precise)
After weeks of showing Okay-ish , Not-that-bad-ish flats our agent finally promised us to show 1 flat, clearly indicating that its little higher than our budget. We convinced ourselves that its just a viewing, lets go for it. The Flat was '40 Eastern Quay Apartments'. The rest they say is History.

"Its Nice, We will take it" said Subarna excitedly. I ssshhhhed her saying that she should not give clear indications while choosing a property to rent else it gives a wrong impression and the agents/landlords would ask for higher rent. I could clearly see the spark in Subarna's eyes, she finally found exactly what she was looking for. As far as the rent is concerned, it was mere double of what we were paying for our old flat. But who cares, as they say 'Jam Miyaa Biwi Raazi to Kya Karega kaazi' !

As I lookback now, few images go past my memory lane..

I am sure our friends in London can add to this above list a lot of other cherishing moments and unforgettable incidents.

The Last 3 years were amazing period of our lives as we made a gradual move from carefree-and-ready-to-party Husband-Wife to more of Daddy-Mommy phase. The journey of 3 years was indeed a roller coaster ride with abundance of ups and downs, and all this happened while we were at '40 Eastern Quay Apartments'.

My Dear BMW

'Its So beautiful!. I said. 'Its So Classy!'. She said. It was Summer of 2007 when SnS (a.k.a Sumeet and Subarna) bought their very first car. It was a BMW 520i Saloon.Before you go ahead and complain to the Income Tax Department and they come asking about the 'source' of funding, I would happily mention that we bought it from our Neighbour 'Mr Bernard'. The Mr. Nice guy was packing his bags and moving from UK to USA for good. The Key to his career in USA was in his hands and the Key to his BMW was now in our hands.

"But why did you buy a BMW, man ! Its so heavy on pockets. What about Servicing costs, Insurance costs, Repair Costs?". A close friend claimed vehemently. "Who Cares!" was my polite reply.I was confident of my 'desi jugaad' in London to help me maintain my BMW at low costs. I was right.

And so began our journey. The destination was never important (It still isnt). Whether it were the trips to the 'phoren' beaches of Southend-On-Sea or Bournemoth , Or the monotonic weekend trip to Tesco, Whether it was a 30 mile trip to Heathrow Airport or a 30 meter trip to Goodmayes station, every single journey was equal Fun. We were proud BMW owners, an elite class!

The next 3 years, from Mid 2007 till Mid 2010, were cute,lovable,cuddable,beautiful,wonderful,lovely,romantic(all adjectives courtesy Mandavi Sharma) and our BMW was always there when we needed 'her'. 'She' was there when Sumeet took Subarna for routine maternity checks.She was there when Subarna was rushed to Newham Hospital and yes She was there with open arms, welcoming our one-day-old Suhaan, thrilled and excited to give Suhaan his first BMW ride from Hospital to Home.

Time, as they say, never stays the same.I realized that 'She' was getting old and I started taking 'her' for granted.I ignored her when she was in pain and cried for 'Oil , Coolant and Engine Servicing'. She showed some obvious signs but I was ignorant. In April 2010, after successfully passing the MOT Test, our 11 year old BMW went berserk. The recovery agent, when he came the second time, started laughing at me. 3 trips to the garages and the mechanics couldnt 'fix' her."The Engine head gasket has gone for a toss", they pointed out."What the heck does that mean?", I said, perplexed and confused. Ironically, fixing the car would have cost more than the 'worth' of the car. I realised that its time for SnS to let her go.

The Part-Exchange option was the next logical route.Thankfully it worked, and now SnS are the owners of a Mercedes C220 Cdi Saloon Sports SE. Whether we are proud owners or just the-next-owners of this Merc, only Time will tell.

My Dear BMW, May you Rest In Peace.

Guys, Finally got the official video link for the Semifinals in the Bollywood Dance Championship 2010 UK. The move into the final round is based on the judge's marks in Semis + no. of comments left in the youtube link.The organisers have played it smartly and put the ball in our court, indirectly asking us to do the publicity and use our social networking. So here I go, falling prey to their tactics and asking all of you(and your frnds and their frnds...) to leave a comment(positively honest comment) on our Semifinal dance video.

SnS Dance Group is Back !

Two years ago in April 2008 with exactly the same passion and excitement I wrote about our newly formed 'SnS Dance Group' in our blog http://sumeetandsubarna.blogspot.com/2008/04/sns-dance-grouppassion-brought-to.html . The article ended with the statement 'Watch this space for more' !

Sincere apologies to all who really 'watched' this space for more because that 'more' never happened.(Though I really doubt whether anyone reads my blog other than Me, Myself and Sumeet). Indeed, we did perform at the charity event for Nandigram and for Asha Foundation. We also entered the unknown territory of theatre by joining hands with Hottomala theatre group and doing some guest appearances in their theatrical shows.

What happened later was supposed to happen sooner or later. SnS (Sumeet and Subarna), after 2 years of girlfriend-boyfriend-ship and 3 years of married life, planned to enter the next phase of their lives, parenthood. SnS Dance Group had to take a break.

Dance for SnS was now a BAN,
But it always felt good to be surrounded by SnS CLAN.
Everything went according to the PLAN,
And soon we were blessed with our baby boy Suhaan!

For next few months SnS danced like never before , only difference is that this time they were dancing to the tunes of Suhaan.

For first few months life was not easy,
because Suhaan always kept us busy!
But since then our life has become a bundle of joy,
because Suhaan is a happy-go-lucky kinda boy !
Regarding SnS return, At first Sumeet and Subarna had different opinion,
but finally we decided to bring SnS back from oblivion.

Subarna has now joined back her office and with her(read..because of her) SnS Dance Group is Back!

We have just performed in the auditions for http://www.desitara.com/talent/contest/Bollywood+Dance+Championships/ and on a serious note have also opened an official facebook page.

The World is Flat !

‘In 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail for India, going west. He had the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He never did find India, but he called the people he met ''Indians'' and came home and reported to his king and queen: ''The world is round.'' I set off for India 512 years later. I knew just which direction I was going. I went east. I had Lufthansa business class, and I came home and reported only to my wife and only in a whisper: ''The world is flat.''’

Thomas L. Friedman, a world-renowned author and journalist and a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, in 2005, authored a book named The World Is Flat which went on to become a huge success, making a phrase that once suggested cluelessness ‘the world is flat’, a marker of sophistication. The book received first Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award and spent more than 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The book that explained globalization and emergence of developing countries to people around the world, especially citizens of developed countries, got its inspiration from Nandan Nilekani, C.E.O of Infosys Technologies Limited, the 2nd largest software consulting firms of India. The book ‘The World Is Flat’ inspired me immensely and influenced my thinking in more ways than I could imagine.

Flashback: Late 1990s. I spent my growing years in a small town of north-western state of India, a town completely ignorant of globalization and future emergence and economic rise of India. The economic reforms of early 1990s had started opening up the Indian economy but unaware of the facts, I had decided to look for challenging opportunities outside India. I was in my 1st year in College when Y2K problem made news and suddenly India was making headlines all over the world. “Indian Engineers could fix the Y2K problem sitting here in India! How is that possible?” I thought.

Year 2003, I was on cloud nine when I received an offer from Infosys. Rated as ‘Best Employer of India’ and winner of Global MAKE (Most Admired Knowledge Enterprises) awards for several years, Infosys was my dream company where I wanted to start my career. The plan was still on. “Get some international experience before settling in UK / US”, I consistently reminded myself. Mid 2005, I was back from my Tokyo trip and as a proud Infoscion, picked up the book ‘The World is Flat’ since it was ‘inspired’ by Infosys CEO’s one line statement to Friedman “The global economic playing field is being levelled.'’

I started reading the book, not realizing that this book is going to change the course of my life. Forever.

Playing field is being levelled. I had a notion that there are not many career opportunities in India and so to have a successful and bright future, I will have to leave my own country. Friedman explained: ‘Only 30 years ago, if you had a choice of being born a B student in Boston or a genius in Bangalore or Beijing, you probably would have chosen Boston, because a genius in Beijing or Bangalore could not really take advantage of his or her talent. They could not plug and play globally. Not anymore. Not when the world is flat, and anyone with smarts, access to Google and a cheap wireless laptop can join the innovation fray.’

Outsourcing. I used to think that Outsourcing is all about opening up Call-Centres and software development in India. But the book clarified that Call-Centres and software development were just a beginning and now India is biggest outsourcing player in the world in the field of financial, engineering, research and development, and even medical and healthcare. The under sea fibre optic cables have connected the entire world in a seamless way and hence the cost, quality and efficiency is more important than the location from where the task is being done.

Offshoring. I still believed that anyone intending to work for Microsoft or IBM will still have to go United States of America. The book nicely explained the term Offshoring by stating that because of the advancement in technology it is now possible for these big companies to internally relocate company's manufacturing, servicing or other business processes to a foreign land to take advantage of less costly operations there. India, having large pool of English speaking pool and technically proficient manpower is surely the biggest winner.

Supply-Chaining. I had no idea that the world's largest public corporation by revenue, Wal-Mart Stores did not produce or manufacture a single product of their own. The book clarified that the company is the best example of Supply-Chaining. It uses technology to streamline item sales, distribution, and shipping and does it to the last atom of efficiency. The book also referred briefly to the ‘Dell’s Theory of Conflict Prevention’ explaining that no two countries that are both part of a major global supply chain, like Dell’s, will ever fight a war against each other as long as they are both part of the same global supply chain. I was also impressed by his Al-Qaeda example. He said ‘Al Qaeda is nothing more than a mutant supply chain. They're playing off the same platform as Wal-Mart and Dell. They're just not restrained by it. What is al Qaeda? It's an open source religious political movement that works off the global supply chain. That's what we're up against in Iraq. We're up against a suicide supply chain. You take one bomber and deploy him in Baghdad, and another is manufactured in Riyadh the next day. It's exactly like when you take the toy off the shelf at Wal-Mart and another is made in Shenzhen the next day.’

Insourcing. An absolute new term which I learnt, was coined by Friedman in the book. He said that companies today have some specific operations and jobs which can not be outsourced to external entities and contractors. Companies want to maintain control of critical production or competencies but at the same time they want to grow, become more efficient and reduce costs. To achieve this, they let a company like UPS (United Parcel Service) come inside and take over their whole logistics operation, everything from filling their orders online to delivering their goods to repairing them for customers when they break. I seriously thought that UPS is just a package delivery company, delivering parcels in their brown trucks but I was amazed to know that UPS not only picks up people’s broken Toshiba laptop but actually repairs them as well.

Informing. Another new term coined by Friedman was Informing. Yes, I was aware of the search engines such as Google but Yahoo but never realized that this is new revolution which is changing our world. "Never before in the history of the planet have so many people – on their own – had the ability to find so much information about so many things and about so many other people," said Friedman. Billion of searches in Google were sheer indicator of how people especially that of developing countries had started gaining knowledge and information. He also gave a brief glimpse of use of technology in future by combining all latest ground breaking hi-tech products and innovations in a term called ‘Steroids’. He mentioned the growing importance and use of digital devices like mobile phones, iPods, personal digital assistants, instant messaging, and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

The gist of the book was nicely worded by Friedman. He said ‘When I was growing up, my parents told me, "Finish your dinner. People in China and India are starving." I tell my daughters "Finish your homework. People in India and China are starving for your job."’

The book was an eye-opener. Never did I gain so much knowledge in so less time, Not in School, Not in College. The book cleared a lot of the misconceptions I had and showed me the ‘bigger picture’ called globalization and growing importance of emerging markets. Today, with more mobile phone connections than the entire population of United States, having one of the fastest growing internet users, economy growing at close to 8 percent even when the world is fighting with recession, and having approximately 300 billion dollars of foreign exchange reserves (a figure which is more than thrice that of United States), India is on the verge of a paradigm shift which will enable the country to take a quantum leap and make it the land of opportunities.

After the widely appreciated performances in India Now festival in London and Rotary Club of Roding we became the UK Champions in the Battle Of Bollywood , Boogie Woogie Dance Championship in London UK.

An apt punchline which explains the fact and the reason of our existence.This is what makes this dance group unique in its own way .The only thing common between the members of the group is their passiontowards dance otherwise all of them are into their full time professions and the group includes a varying mix of IT Professionals / Web Designers / Charted Accountants to name a few.

Subarna's Story

December 12th, I guess the date is very lucky for me. Exactly 2 years before on this date myself and Sumeet performed in Samavesh and for the first time in my life I felt my dance is not complete without Sumeet being there. With no more than a couple of months time we realized we are inseparable. The best part about us is that we change roles in accordance to the situation. I can't categorize our relationship. At times we are like best friends,at times we are the two most romantic people on earth, at times we mentor each other, criticize each other and at times we act like two small kids. The saying goes "Opposites attract". Well in our case , it does not hold true.I keep thanking God for bringing us together.

Sumeet's Story

Year 2003 ,after few months of initial Training at Infosys Hyderabad our Batch was given our Final Postings.Few of my close friends got Pune as their Permanent location and i was asked to join Infosys Bangalore.New City , New Project with no friends.There were times when i went for lunch alone.Then came "Samavesh" , the Inter Infosys Annual Cutural Fest. The Very first Day of Practice Sessions and i realized that now I ve got a friend.We Started having lunch together , then dinner together and then finally Breakfast together :-)Now it feels great to realize that the woman i love is also my best friend.
